Navaratri, which means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, is a Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mother in the form of the Goddess Durga. The tenth day, known as Vijayadashami or Dussehra, is celebrated as the day Durga slayed the demon Mahishasura after fighting with him for 9 nights and 10 days.  Also on this day, Lord Rama prayed to Goddess Durga, who blessed him with the power to kill the demon king Ravana.

Navaratri is celebrated in many colorful and fun ways.  Nine forms of Devi are worshipped by doing daily alankar – or dressing – for Devi in a different form for each day.  Other festivities include ‘golu’ or display of Indian dolls, Devi puja and dandiya dancing with wooden sticks.

This is a most powerful time to connect with Mother energy.  Mother worship during this time can bring tremendous healing and completion in all aspects of your life.
